The strong wine tradition of the Algarve has existed since the Muslim occupation. The Arabs not only planted the vineyard as exported the wine produced there. After the reconquest of this small but fertile territory by the Christians, these took advantage from and developed the economic organization bequeathed by other people.
The region of Tavira is situated in the territory of the Algarve coastline and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, the Caldeirão Mountain and the Guadiana River, and extends through the municipalities of Faro, Olhão, São Brás de Alportel, Castro Marim, Tavira and Vila Real St. António. The typical Mediterranean climate provides for the production of wines with characteristics of a hot region. The varieties used in the preparation of these wines are the white Syria and the red Negra Mole and Periquita.
