A relative to the shark and the ray, the dogfish was one of the few fish from the sea that reached the majority of the population - not only because it could handle better transport, but also because it was the cheapest.
Recipe of the Alentejo cuisine, the dogfish soup can also be made with cod, and then is called cod soup with dogfish sauce. Yet, in tougher times, nor cod nor dogfish were in it: it was just the broth of boiling the fish, and workers gave him the name of white soup.
