This is one of the most recent natural parks in Portugal, created in 1998. Despite being based in Mogadouro, it covers the long Douro line between Miranda do Douro and Barca d’Alva. The river that once flew along the deep waters of rocky canyons has been controlled by five major hydroelectric stations, three of them in Portugal – Miranda, Picote and Bemposta – and two in Spain – Aldeadavila and Saucelle. Along a 120km extension, Douro river sets the border between the two countries. The park covers a 85150 ha protected area. It includes the cliffs of Douro and of its tributary river Águeda (setting the border between Barca d’Alva and Castelo Rodrigo); the plateau of Miranda do Douro; the forest hills of Mogadouro; the beautiful valley of Mosteiro water stream (Freixo-de-Espada-à-Cinta), as well as Santa Maria de Aguiar reservoir, located in the left margin of Douro in Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo council. In terms of botany, the main highlights are: the endemic juniper forests, oaks, cork oaks, oaks and whitebeam trees. As far as fauna is concerned, birds are the main species, especially the ones that breed in the rocky formations, such as the black stork, the Egyptian vulture, the griffon, the golden eagle or Bonelli eagle. The microclimate in the cliffs is good for Mediterranean agricultural plantations, the olive tree plantation being the most common one. The vine is a true landmark, for Douro Wine Region is located not very far from here. The greatest vine areas can be found in the riverside zone of Bruçóand Picote (where the vineyards close to the ground produce the typical wine of Miranda do Douro plateau), as well as in Freixo-de-Espada-à-Cinta and Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo. Almond trees and orange trees grow here for the same reasons. Douro is worth visiting, especially in February and March, in order to watch the breathtaking show of the blossoming almond trees. In the plateaus, extensive non-irrigated culture is the predominant one, offering wheat, oat and rye. The cereal areas with trees in the surroundings, the woods and the fertile irrigated zones design the landscape setting. The natural park covers a significant part of autochthonous breeds, as for instance oxen (“bordaleses”) and sheep (“churras”, “mirandesas” and “Terra Quente”). The structure of the cultivated soil has led to the preservation of woods and forests with high biodiversity. It has a vast archaeological heritage, which testifies an ancient human presence in the region (it is worth bearing in mind that Côa Archaeological Park with its Palaeolithic engravings classified by UNESCO as World Heritage is located in the south of this protected area). The area of Douro Internacional is very rich in ethnologic traditions, handicraft and gastronomy. The main folk expression is performed by the so-called “Pauliteiros de Miranda”. They dance to the sound of bagpipes, wear skirt and fence with wooden sticks, faking a fight. Their ancient language, “mirandês”, can still be heard in the village and it was officially recognised as a language (it is not a dialect, since its roots are as ancient as the ones of Portuguese and Spanish). In term of gastronomy, the main specialities are local meat (“posta mirandesa”), roasted kid and lamb, wines (Port and Planalto), olive oil, sheep and goat cheese, honey, dry fruits and sausages. Boat trips are already being organised by Douro Natural Park in many places.
