This sweet is attributed either to the S. Bernardo de Portalegre Monastery or to the town of Nisa. In a publication devoted to the study of Alentejo, it is quoted: "and among the so-called egg-sweets, without skipping the famous 'lampreys', one has to mention the 'candies', which are perhaps the best and tastiest ever manufactured in Portugal, according to the statement of an homesick old friend of mine who ran the world and much relished them".
