Blessed by nature

Bathed by the Atlantic Ocean and crossed by Cávado river (in the south) and Neiva river (in the north), Esposende council found in the sea and in the river both its origin and its reason of being. It is the only council of Braga district located by the coast. In Palaeolithic, several villages settled around the Atlantic coastline, based upon the salt industry, its first major industry. However, these villages have evolved throughout the centuries, as seen for instance in São Lourenço hill fort or 16th century São João Baptista, built for defending the coast. Region’s industrial development is quite recent. Agriculture and cattle industry also play a major role, along with tourism, decisive in fuelling economic development. Tourism promotion is beyond any doubt a good strategy, since this council has plenty of attractions, as for instance the North Coastal Nature Park (Parque Natural do Litoral Norte). This vast protected area stretches over a coastline full of beautiful beaches and a unique biodiversity, apart from Apúlia windmills, among the greatest regional highlights. Nevertheless, Esposende is also famous for its gastronomy based on fish and seafood specialities. It is a region of deep-rooted traditions, such as São Bartolomeu do Mar Feast, one of the most prominent in the country, protecting for centuries the believers from the “Devil’s evils”.
