Évora is one of the rare few Portuguese cities to keep its former walls almost intact. From the Roman period onwards, these walls have continuously integrated fortified lines, erected by Visigoths, Moors and Medieval Portuguese, in order to protect the city. From the 16th century part of the wall drawing was remodelled and adapted for artillery purposes. The outdoor circular makes it possible to go round the still existing walls, either on foot or by car. There are several doors leading to the centre, located inside the walls, for it is advisable to leave your car in one of the outdoor car parks.
