It is one of Faro’s most beautiful monuments, situated in a pleasant square with orange trees next to the Bishop’s House in Vila-a-Dentro. It was built in 1251 upon a former mosque, becoming a cathedral in 1577. The clock tower was remodelled after the 1755 earthquake. It is an adaptation of one of the towers of the former wall, providing a splendid view over the city and the ria (drowned river valley). Most interior décor is Baroque with 16th century tiles and altarpieces in gilt carved wood. Also worth highlighting is an historical organ that dates back to the 18th century, standing out as one of the most ancient ones in the country.
