It is said that the first Faro walls were built in the Muslim period. A defence wall was built in 1250, namely after Faro conquer under the reign of D. Afonso III. This wall would later be rebuilt under D. João III reign. However, two devastating earthquakes in 1720 and 1755 left it in ruins. It is possible to go along the city wall through an interesting walk from Ria Formosa side, since there are several intact remains of the defence wall and the castle, both located between Vila-a-Dentro and São Francisco square.
