The origins of this festival date back to the sixteenth century. Legend has it that the people martyred by several epidemics of plague, made an offering in honor of St. Sebastian consisting of sweet corn cakes of wheat bread - the 'fogaças'. These were taken to the mother church to be blessed and then distributed by the population. The plague had been eliminated but then, when the festivities were interrupted between 1749 and 1753, a new outburst of this pest occurred. Taking the occurrence as a divine punishment, the population quickly endeavoured to resume the tradition, which remains until today.
