Situated at the north slope of Estrela Mountain, it is said that this castle may have been built in 1183 upon the ruins of a former Lusitanian fort hill. Locals believe that Viriato, the Lusitanian warrior, was born here, however several authors argue that this castle dates back to the Middle Ages, that is to say later on. In 1350, it was given the “foral” (Royal document) by King D. Dinis. In the 20th century (1938-39), the castle was rebuilt, following a revival style of circular plan, squared tower and cylindrical lookouts. The castle was not built upon documents, nor did it integrate original elements, which makes it particularly striking.
