Panóias sanctuary, located in the surroundings of Vila Real, is one of the most enigmatic cases of Portuguese archaeology. It consists of a set of connected grooves excavated in the rocks, through which the blood of sacrificed animals flew. Roman presence becomes clear by the epigraphs excavated in the rocks, which allow recovering the sacred rituals performed in the sanctuary. It may also have been used during Visigoth period.
