A floating Youth Hostel? That’s right. The Gil Eannes ship which is anchored at the old Viana do Castelo port, has just been transformed into a splendid Youth Hostel. The ex-libris of the city, which for many years was the hospital ship for cod fishermen, has 57 beds and a common room. In Viana do Castelo, there are various monuments, stores and gardens to visit as well as tasting their vinho verde and good food. A point of interest in the city is the Senhora da Agonia Festival which takes place in August and reproduces the cultural traditions of the Alto Minho.
