Beaches and plains in Vila Morena

Covering an area that stretches from the Atlantic coastline to the typical Alentejo plain, the council of Grândola has one of the longest coastlines in the country, standing out as an example of coastal preservation. Even though the beautiful Tróia peninsula is rich in tourism unities, the municipality still has almost desert sand areas to offer, where nature and rest are the main cornerstones. Grândola Mountain sets the border between Atlantic plains and cork oak fields and other Mediterranean woods, offering a beautiful view, namely next to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Penha. This land became famous as “Vila Morena”, the name of a song composed and sung by Zeca Afonso, one of the greatest 20th century songwriters and singers. In fact, this song was the password for the military operations that were in the origin of the revolution of April 25th 1974. As far as council’s heritage is concerned, it is worth highlighting the Roman ruins of Tróia and the Megalithic monument of Lousal, a village that has an interesting mining museum, the first of the kind in Portugal. Some religious temples deserve a thorough visit, especially the main church with a Mannerism painting and a tile portal, which are noteworthy.
