Grão Vasco Museum is situated in the former Episcopal House, a 16th century building, attached to the Cathedral, which was the former Bishop’s House and the Seminary. The museum was officially opened in 1918. The main collection embraces the works of the legendary Grão Vasco (or Vasco Fernandes, born in 1540), a painting master, born in Viseu, who has left a deep mark on 15th century Portuguese scholar painting, influenced by Italian Renaissance. The museum comprises also another important collection of 19th and 20th century painting. Worth highlighting, are names like Columbano, Silva Porto, Malhoa, Dórdio Gomes and Alfredo Keil, among others. There are also examples of sculpture, ceramics, tissues and furniture. From 2001 to 2003, the museum underwent an extensive recovey and intervention plan. It reopened to the public in 2004, deeply renewed.
