Guadiana Valley Nature Park was created in the end of 1995, covering a 69.600 ha area. One part of the park is located in Serpa council, while the other is situated in Mértola council. It follows the Guadiana river between Pulo do Lobo waterfall and the confluence with Vascão river stream (separating Alentejo from the Algarve). This park was created to ensure the protection of an outstanding natural and built heritage. It covers Guadiana river zone with its weirs and mills, as well as Mértola, the museum-town. This nature park also includes the ancient São Domingos mine complex, where you can still contemplare the railway platform through which the ore was transported to the river port of Pomarão, downstream from Mértola. Guadiana Valley is an important corridor for migratory birds. There are important groups of Bonelli’s eagles, Egyptian Vultures and Eurasian Eagle-owls, as well as common storks and rare black storks, which are hard to spot.
