IPR Aire Slopes

Since the Roman period that the vineyard has a relevant status in the rural life of the Encostas de Aire region. In the twelfth century, the monks of Cister and the Holy Cross, with all their technique and know-how, caused these wines to be exported to northern Europe. Located in Serra de Aire, this is the largest area with the Extremadura geographical status, and includes all the municipalities of Batalha and Vila Nova de Ourém and part of the districts of Leiria, Pombal and Porto de Mos. Here are two great bastions of wine throughout the province: the valleys of the Cortes and of Espite, two majestic spots of no wired vineyards, arranged along the slopes. The climate is temperate, with formation of microclimates, and the soil is characterized by the heterogeneity of its types. Recently new varieties have been planted, such as Baga or Castelão and white varieties as Arinto, Malvasia, Fernão Pires, who share the soil with other Portuguese and international varieties, such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Aragonez, Touriga Nacional or Trincadeira.
