Itinerary through the South Shore of Tagus River

A tour through the southern bank of the Tagus, covering the coast between Sesimbra and Caparica, not forgetting sites as Fonte da Telha, Lagoa de Albufeira, Praia do Meco and Cape Espichel.

This itinerary starts in Lisbon, in Praça de Espanha, tours the South Bank, to end in Sesimbra. After crossing the 25 de Abril Bridge, exit A2 at the first node in the direction of Caparica. Exit the highway at the access node to Universidade Nova and follow signs for Trafaria. The descent of the cliff will give you a very nice overview of the Tagus estuary. If mealtime, you'll find interesting options in this old fishing village. Go to Caparica and continue along the road parallel to the sea that will lead you to Fonte da Telha. With an easy traffic, visit the town and enjoy the not so-crowded beach. Here, you'll find the fresh fish to be quite tempting. Back on the road, go back a few hundred meters towards Caparica and turn right, following the signs to Amora and Fogueteiro. Once here, take the road to Sesimbra (EN378). Shortly after Fernão Ferro, in a large roundabout, turn right to Lagoa de Albufeira and Praia do Meco. After a few miles you'll pass at the head of that pond. It is worthwhile to enter its access, a bit further away. The process of urban redevelopment restored some of the damage caused by illegal construction. There are plenty of choices for beautiful tours around the vast reflecting pool, a favorite for windsurfers. Take note of some restaurants and terraces with good views. Back on the road, continue straight ahead until the Aldeia do Meco. Its beaches, some with more sand, others with more cliff, are much appreciated by naturists and have plenty of spots where to spend some pleasant moments by the sea. Continue towards the south by a narrow road that will lead you to Azóia. You are already very near Cape Espichel, a point to visit. On your way to the cliffs and the lighthouse, pay a visit to the Church of Our Lady of the Cape, which rehabilitation was taken by the National Monuments. It's worth walking in this area where, in addition to great views and clean air, you will find on the cliffs of Praia dos Lagosteiros, dinosaur footprints millions years old. Now you just have to take the EN377 towards Sesimbra, where this ride ends. Along the way, a nice closure for this day will be the visit to the medieval castle overlooking the fishing village. Do not miss also a stroll by the seaside, which has now been rehabilitated along the entire length of the beach. Access From Praça de Espanha, down through Av. Gulbenkian and entering the road leading to the 25 de Abril Bridge. Length Some 100 km (the return trip Sesimbra-Lisboa was not considered). To take into account Avoid traffic jams on 25 de Abril Bridge not making this tour on early evenings nor on week-end mornings. When With good weather, regardless of season; it is not advisable in August, as it is likely that the itinerary will be too crowded. Meals Antiga Casa Marítima, in Trafaria (T. 212950889); O Camões, in Fonte da Telha (T. 212963865). Other spots to visit Palmela Castle in Palmela; Forte de São Filipe (Setúbal).
