Jesus Monastery that belonged to the female Dominican order was founded in the beginning of 15th century by D. Brites Leitoa, who would enter this monastery in 1458. Later the daughter of King D. Afonso V, Prncess Joana, entered the monastery as a nun and died here as a saint. The tomb of Princess Joana is one of the major examples of this type of art in Portugal, deserving a visit to the former convent. The monastery is decorated with plant-related motifs, created by João Antunes. The Baroque gilt carved wood and tiles are also worth highlighting. During your visit, you should pay attention to the Manueline portals, the Renaissance cloister and the church main chapel, depicting Mannerism influences. Aveiro Regional Museum is located in this building, founded by art critic and scholar F. A. Marques Gomes.
