Lamego is located at the heart of Douro wine region, classified by UNESCO as World Heritage, easily accessible through the highway A24. It was in this ancient city that the first Royal Courts of Portugal took place between 1142 and 1144. North from the city, you will find the Douro slopes full of vines, where the famous Port Wine is produced. To the south, east and west, the heights of Meadas and Montemuro mountains, frequently covered by snow, along with more wine producing zones, namely table and sparkling wine. So many centuries full of history have left strong marks. Its main highlights being the castle, the cathedral and the Medieval quarter. In the surroundings, on the way down to Régua, there is the Visigothic chapel São Pedro de Balsemão, a jewel of Pre-Romanic architecture. Its gastronomy is prestigious, but the “bôla” (local speciality, resembling a cake, made of meat, sausage or sardine) is the local attraction. Overlooking the city, at the top of a mount, you will find Nossa Senhor das Remédios sanctuary, connected to the city centre through a monumental staircase. Famous all over the country, Nossa Senhora dos Remédios procession occurs from August 26th to September 11th. The most important moment of this religious feast is the procession, during which the statue of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, along with others, are carried in ornamented cars, moved by oxen
