In the Azores and in Madeira the nativity sets are called "lapinhas". These caves are dug on land slopes featuring the Virgin Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus and the traditional animals. The 19th century was an era of splendour with nativity sets decorated with flower arrangements made of paper, feathers, wax and silver paper. Currently the "lapinhas" are decorated with plants, fruits and flowers or with regional motifs, windmills, agricultural tools which are typical objects of Azorean handicraft.
