One of the most interesting original Portuguese popular feasts is celebrated in Lazarim, a village located in the surroundings of Lamego. The carnival tradition goes had in hand with primitive masks, sex war and a bit of social satire. The feast cycle begins five weeks before Carnival Sunday. On Carnival Tuesday after the parade of traditional masks (made of wood or can), the verses of the “Godmother’s and Godfather’s will” are read aloud. In this sex battle, truths that have been kept secret all year long are finally said. The feasts end with the burning o the Godfather and the Godmother, as well as with the parade of the “caretos” (masked participants). A mask contest awards the artisans who take part of these peculiar feasts.
