Impressive for its grandiosity, Lisbon Cathedral was built by King D. Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, after conquering the city to the Moors in 1147. This cathedral lies upon a former mosque. In Romanic style (the only monument of this sort that lingered in Lisbon); the Cathedral has a Latin cross interior and three naves. The façade has a porch and a portal with four primitive Romanic archivolts. Despite being a Romanic temple that resembles a fortress, Lisbon Cathedral deeply changed throughout the centuries, because of the damages caused by several earthquakes. The cloister is an example of those transformations, built in Gothic style. In the Gothic chapel we can observe a terracotta work depicting the birth of Jesus, conceived by Machado de Castro. The graves of King D. Afonso IV and his wife D. Beatriz, D. Lopo Fernandes Pacheco (D. Afonso IV knight) and his wife Maria Vilalobos and merchant Bartolomeu Joanes can be found here.
