The city of Lisbon celebrates its patron saint each year during the month of June. The cult of St. Anthony relates to fertility rites, so traditionally the youngsters burn artichokes to guess about the future of their love and ask for protection. Given the Saint's fame of being a holy protector against all evil and also of being a matchmaker, the government introduced, as from the 50s, the tradition of 'St. Anthony's Brides'. But the heyday of the Feasts of St. Anthony are the Popular Marches, which represent the various districts of Lisbon. This event brings thousands of spectators to Avenida da Liberdade. The festival ends with entertainment in the most typical quarters of Lisbon, especially in Alfama and Madragoa, where everybody enjoys the grilled sardines and the 'sangria' beverage.
