More recent than Madeira embroidery, tapestry started in the island towards the end of last century, by the hand of the embroiderers themselves. In 1936, the tapestry industry is established in the region by the German painter Herbert Kiekeben. Henceforth, the embroiderers excel in this art, using wool and cotton thread to 'paint' on canvas. Once you get the original drawing, often as ordered, this will be copied to new canvases and reproduced with previously selected wools. Techniques depend on the drawing to be reproduced: the "grado" (large) stitch, the "miúdo" (little) stitch, the "gobleliu stitch" or the "alinhavado" (basting stitch).
