Mafra National Palace reached its peak in the first years of the 19th century under D. João VI ruling. During this period, the palace salons exhibited several artistic masterpieces. In 1807, D. João VI departures to Brazil, taking with him some of those highly valuable objects that would never return to the palace. Audience Room, also known as Throne Room, was the place were gala receptions were held. It is completely covered by wall paintings, conceived by Domingos Sequeira and Cirilo Wolkmar Machado in the beginning of the 18th century. The 26m-long Benediction Room, situated in the middle of the main gallery, is one of the most important palace rooms. This room is filled with multicoloured marbles of Pêro Pinheiro region, presenting a cylindrical panel covered with panels and walls ornamented with Doric pilasters and frames. In this room, you will see the stands, where the Royal family attended the mess through the three windows turned to the interior of the church. At the centre of this room, lies the famous bust of D. João V, entrusted by his son D. José I to the Italian master Alessandro Giusto. The rooms are decorated with 18th and 19th century furniture, preserving many 17th century paintings that initially belonged to the Basilica. These paintings were conceived by French painter Pierre Antoine Quillard, Italian masters Trevisani, Massucci, Conca and Corradi and Portuguese painters Francisco Vieira Lusitano, Inácio de Oliveira Bernardes and André Gonçalves. Mafra Palace was mostly inhabited in the Summer, namely during the hunting season. D. Carlos and D. Amélia, for example, used to hunt in Tapada de Mafra. In October 1910, D. Manuel II spent here his last night in Portugal before setting off to exile in England, by the time the Portuguese Republic was established.
