In our country the inlaying technique has been used since the 16th century in Indo-Portuguese furniture, specially "contadores" (cabinets). The craftsman uses a drawing and makes holes in it by using a punch. Then he empties the spaces by inlaying the minute pieces that were carved. The materials used are: various types of wood (violet wood, rosewood, etc), ebony, mahogany, mother-of-pearl and ivory. The tools used by the artisan are the chisel and the file.
