Antonio Marrare, a cook from the Italian region of Naples, settled in Lisbon in the late eighteenth century, where he was the owner of several cafes and the entrepreneur of the Lisbon Opera House, Theater S. Carlos. In the facilities owned by him in Rua dos Sapateiros, known as the Marrare of the Seven Doors, the famous steak was made and took his name. A variation of Marrare Steak is Steak Cafe, where the sauce is made with milk instead of cream, added of a bit of mustard and lemon. This recipe does not include coffee as an ingredient and its name comes from the place where it was traditionally served.
