Description of the place: Marvão is a 862m high village of North Alentejo, situated in S. Mamede mountain range, the highest Alentejo zone. From the top of its century-old walls, the view is breathtaking, reaching as far as 50km. Marvão is the ideal place to walk, due to its winding streets, delimited by white houses. As far as its heritage is concerned, we highlight Estrela Convent, founded by Franciscans in 1418, the former Governor’s house with beautiful granite balcony windows in wrought iron and the Renaissance Espírito Santo church. Apart from this, do not miss the chance to visit the keep, as well as the peculiar vault-shaped cistern that provided water to the village. The beauty of the place along with the well-preserved medieval village turn Marvão into a jewel of national heritage.
Points of interest: Convento de N. Sr.ª da Estrela (15th century Franciscan monastery); Manueline cross; Largo do Pelourinho; Igreja do Espírito Santo (Renaissance); Igreja de Santa Maria (where the Municipal Museum is located); castle; donjon; cistern (with a capacity to supply the population for about six months); Espírito Santo fountain.
