Monchique is a charming town of white houses situated at an altitude of 458m in Monchique Mountain, the borderline between the Algarve and the Alentejo, forming a high barrier (over 1000m high in its highest peak, Fóia), enabling the condensation of maritime winds, generating milder temperatures and higher precipitation than in the rest of the region. Therefore, the result is a landscape that awakens some comparisons with Sintra Mountain with wild hills covered by woods, where fires have left some open scars. South from council’s headquarters, geological curiosities have benefited Caldas de Monchique thermal stations, whose waters were already used by Romans and Arabs. Recently renewed, these thermal stations offer all services of modern spas, still preserving an untouched charm of thermal architecture of the beginning of the 20th century. Some of the mountain villages also preserve important monuments such as the main church of Marmelete, Quinta de Santo António and its picturesque chapel (in Casais) and the parish church of Alferce. In terms of regional products, the honey of Monchique is quite appreciated.
