Contacts
This castle rises east from Chaves in a hill over the fertile swamp fields. The castle survived the Tâmega river floods, which explains its name “Rio Livre” (literally, Free River). During the wars between Portuguese and Léon armies, the fortress was destroyed, but it was rebuilt by D. Afonso III in 1250. Later D. Dinis reinforced the castle by adding four towers and by extending the wall perimeter. Only the keep remained of the four original towers.
