A castle was firstly built in this strategically located spot, in a hill over the Guadiana, quite close to the Spanish border. It was not until the 17th century that a polygon-shaped fortress was erected for artillery purposes. But there is more to Monsaraz. One must contemplate the sight from the top of the walls, now over Alqueva reservoir, to see that it was worth it. Most part of the Medieval castle built under D. Afonso III still remains today. The keep in pentagon-shaped plan, the Treason and Tower doors and part of the former wall are some of those vestiges. The old Medieval town of Monsaraz, also very well preserved, stands out as a great highlight, because of its white houses and of its arches and balcony windows in forged iron. The monuments of Monsaraz are also worth highlighting: Church Igreja S. João Baptista, a former Muslim sanctuary, Paços da Audiência with its magnificent 15th century fresco depicting earthly justice and Church Igreja de Santa Maria, still preserving its Roman-Gothic apse.
