Montemor-o-Novo is council’s headquarters, comprising 10 civil parishes. It is located in the right margin of Canha river stream, a tributary river of Sorraia river. It has been inhabited since Roman times. The first inhabitants firstly settled at the top of the current castle’s hill, later occupying the north-oriented slope. Montemor-o-Novo is rich in archaeological vestiges. Our attention should be drawn to a great number of Megalithic monuments such as Menires and Escoural Cave, containing paintings and engravings that testify human presence in the region since Upper Palaeolithic period. In the 15th and 16th centuries, it turned into one of the most populated localities in Portugal, due to its privileged location between Lisbon and the inland. In 1988, it became a city. This area is famous for wicker baskets, as well as works in leather and skin. Worth mentioning are the Harvest Feasts taking place on the first September weekend.
