The town of Montemor-o-Velho is situated in the right margin of Mondego river between Coimbra and Figueira da Foz. Low Mondego river flows at its feet along the former rice fields, now used in irrigated crops. Since more remote times, this town had a great strategic and economic importance, disputed for centuries by Moors and Christians. At the centre of the fights laid one of the most beautiful castles of Portugal. In the Middle Ages, this castle had four hospitals inside and a few other convents. Nowadays, the fortress complex is quite well-preserved, still determining the skyline of the town. Surrounded by the walls, the historical centre presents the palace Paço das Infantas. This was the Royal residence until the 16th century. According to tradition, it was here that King D. Afonso IV decided the destiny of D. Inês de Castro. Few vestiges have remained from the Gothic palace, however inside the ruins a pleasant terrace works here, Casa do Chá (teahouse). If you are driving along the council, you must head to Tentúgal, an ancient town where the Carmelite nuns used to live. Apart from religious tasks, the nuns also worked on the arts of sugar, devoting most of their time to the production of famous Tentúgal pastries.
