A circuit starting in Castro Daire enabling the viewing of some of the most beautiful areas of the Montemuro mountains, often covered with snow in winter.In Castro Daire, whereto you can easily arrive from Viseu by A24, take the exit sliproad to the north of the village and take the EN2, direction Lamego. Later, turner to the left, to EN321, Cinfães direction. After the gas station in Povoa de Montemuro you are at 500 m distance of Portas de Montemuro. From here you can enjoy the mountains, villages, green valleys and, in the right season, see lots of snow. Nearby, they were found remains of an Iron Age settlement, protected by a polygonal wall of 1.5 km. Go back to Povoa de Montemuro and, later, turn in the direction of Faifa. It is a beautiful but narrow road that descends to the river Paiva, whose valley will become more and more visible towards the south. Exit to the left, following the path to Ester de Cima. Go through the picturesque village of Faifa by the main road up to the Calvary and the asphalt road.
Once at the junction with EN225, go left, towards Castro Daire. After Pinheiro, in Ermida, go to the left to see the Parish Church, the highpoint of this tour.
Also known as the Temple of Acronyms (Templo das Siglas), it is dedicated to Our Lady of Conception, corresponding to the final stage of the Romanesque (twelfth century). The portal is decorated all around with chapiters and figures of dogs. The profusion of marks carved into the stone by the masters masons is extraordinary, particularly on the facade facing the road and the Paiva. Neighbouring the Church, the ruins of the convent of the St. Augustine Order of Premonstratensians, the only one to be seen in Portugal.
