Created in 1979, this is one of Portugal’s greatest protected zones, covering a 75000 area. Its symbol is the chestnut flower. Situated in the northeast region of Trás-os-Montes, Montesinho Natural Park forms a polygon, whose vertexes are Bragança, Vinhais, Cisterna and Rio de Onor. It covers the mountains of Montesinho (1438m high) and Coroa (1117m) in a mountanious landscape, influenced by the contrast between peaks and open valleys, drawn by water lines over a schist soil. From west to east, you will find Mente river (in the western border of the park), as well as rivers Rabaçal, Tuela, Baceiro, Onor and Maçãs. Baceir is a tributary river of Tuela, while Mente is a tributary river of Rabaçal. Tuela and Rabaçal rivers flow into Tua river, in the surroundingd of Mirandela. Rivers Igreja and Onor form Sabor river in Gimonde village (near Bragança). A few km downstream, Maçãs river flows into Sabor river. It is a diversified landscape: high mountain (Lama Grande heights, north from Montesinho village, where it usually snows), irrigated fields (these fields have been preserved thanks to a skilful ancient system of irrigation used as pastures for cattle). The woods include oak trees, chestnut trees, pine trees and birches. The main fauna species are the goshawk, the golden eagle, the water mole and the wild boar. In the highest zones of Montesinho Park over 1200m, it usually snows and fogs from December to March. Rio de Onor is the most famous village of the park, since it has preserved interesting community traditions, such as the practice of making parties with masks on. This tradition is inspired by ancient passage or initiation rituals that take place in Christmas and New Year’s Eve, in several villages near Bragança.
