Moura Castle was erected in a limestone elevation upon a pre-Roman hill fort and it would be rebuilt in 1295 under D. Dinis reign, as soon as the rights of Portugal over Moura, Serpa and Mourão were recognized. It was later destroyed by Restoration War and by 1755 earthquake, turning it into ruins and to total destruction. Nevertheless, one can still contemplate in present time the castle’s nine towers, in a somehow inconsistent state, remains of the walls and their weepholes, Arab style doors, Porta da Traição (literally Treason Door) with a Gothic arch and the keep with the spectacular Medieval vault room Sala dos Alcaides.
