The olive oil produced in Moura has both chemical and sensory properties. It is also very rich in fat monounsaturated acids. Its production dates back to Roman times. Roman author Pliny marvelled at the art and skilfulness that olive oil production required from local inhabitants, mentioning Moura olive oil as a clear example of those qualities. There is a Portuguese popular saying used to suggest someone’s intelligence or smartness that clearly defines this olive oil: “to be as exquisite as Moura olive oil”. Until 1974, Moura had Europe’s largest olive tree plantation. In present day, it still preserves a manual olive mill, which is probably unique in the Iberian Peninsula, wonderfully preserved.
