This fair began in the middle of the 18th century, known by then as São Martinho Fair. However, after 1972 it was named National Horse Fair. Already by that time, the fair was more than a regional fair, reinforcing the importance of the Lusitano horse. In fact, it is precisely in Golegã Fair that this animal shows all its abilities, wheter in the organised exhibit sessions during the fair, or in the equestrian games, raids, championships, carriage marathon, jumping or races. The greatest highlight of this fair that takes place in November is the national saddle horse competition, where the champion award is given. The stallions’ parade is held at the end of the fair. These animals keep the qualities of Lusitano horse alive. This is also a vanity fair, where Ribatejo inhabitants exhibit their feather hats and riding outfits, which led to the recovery of the Jacket Ball, demanding Portuguese style riding outfit or dark suit. Apart from horse and riding art-related aspects, the fair has also a commercial purpose. Here you will find several objects for sale, as well as restaurants.
