Queluz Palace, located in Sintra, is one of the most famous and visited monuments in the country. It is used as a museum, a pousada and a restaurant, as well as an official guest room, where the President of the Portuguese Republic welcomes his most noble guests. Infant D. Pedro III, son of King D. João V, ordered its construction in 1747. National Queluz Palace is integrated in a vast architectural setting with its beautiful gardens, the kitchen facilities (nowadays Cozinha Velha Restaurant) and the former Royal guard Pavillion (converted in a Pousada). It was used as a Royal House and it is considered an example of monumental 18th century Baroque architecture, due to its richly ornamented tile decoration, mural paintings, gilt carved wood and crystal chandeliers. The initial project was commisiioned to the architect Mateus Vicente, to convert the 17th century hunting pavilion in a rococo style Summer residence. After the marriage of D. Maria to D. Pedro III, the palace was getting larger thanks to the work of French architect Jean-Baptiste Robillion, who conceived the building named after him, the gardens and who also modified the Music Room and the Throne Room. National Queluz Palace has several rooms, such as the Throne Room, considered one of the palace’s most beautiful rooms, with its Atlantes golden statues made by Silvestre Faria Lobo; the Ambassadors’ Room with a trompel`oeil ceiling depicting the Royal family attending a concert; The Council Room, where the King used to meet with his ministers; the Music Room with leisure purposes and D. Quixote Room, where King D. Pedro IV was born and died, with a ceiling covered by D. Quixote-related drawings. In Sala das Merendas you can contemplate paintings depicting the Royal Family in picnics, whereas in Corredor das Mangas one can observe late 18th century tiles representing hunting, continents’ and seasons’ scenes. The magnificent Palace gardens are definitely a world apart. While the Palace’s influences are French, the Italian style has prevailed in the garden drawing. Profusely vegetated, the gardens are ornamented with statues, lakes, fountains, and tiles.
