The current town has evolved in a different place from the one former Nisa Castle had settled in until the 13th century (on the road to Salavessa, a rounded crest with Nossa Senhora da Graça church on its top). D. Dinis ordered town’s reconstruction on the plain, next to the existing Templar castle. This process was finished in 1296. From the former four doors only Town and Montalvão (National Monument) doors have remained, connected by rectilinear streets, where you can still find some Dionysian portals. The main church was erected on the location of the former Templar castle in Dr. António Granjo square. In order to reach it, you have to cross the Town Door, through Republic Square. From this spot, the streets converge to Municipal Square with the Frade fountain, Misericórdia Church and Town Hall. Nisa owns a very beautiful natural heritage that can be contemplated from Senhora da Graça viewpoint (300m high) and S. Miguel mountain viewpoint (460m high). It has a thermal station, Termas da Fadagosa. A famous procession in homage to S. Simão takes place on the fourth August Sunday, in Pé da Serra civil parish.
