There are Medieval drawings that depict anchored boats next to Óbidos walls. Present day lagoon, located some hundred meters away from the town, was once a vast interior gulf connected to the ocean that has been covered with sand in the meantime. It stretches to Vau, Bom Sucesso, Foz do Arelho and Nadadouro. Its mouth constantly changes over the years because of the streams and tides. It attracts many visitors in Summer. The north margin (Foz do Arelho) and the south margin (Bom Sucesso) comprise sand areas. It offers excellent conditions for nautical sports, regardless of having a motor.
