Science and heritage by the sea
Oeira is neither as dynamic as a metropolis like Lisbon, nor as beautiful or cosmopolitan as Cascais. However, this small council with a reasonable large riverside area, has considerably developed over the last decades, becoming recognised, mainly for being the residence or the basis of enterprises, services and of scientific research centres. Such is the case of Science Gulbenkian Institute, Chemical and Biological Ttechnology Institute or Tagus Park. The riverside area has been preserved and requalified, especially the riverside walk from Santo Amaro de Oeiras to Tower Beach. Besides, a series of maritime fortresses evokes the defence effort of this coast, Lisbon and its port, the most famous one being São Julião da Barra. Also near the coast, in Algés, you will find Vasco da Gama Aquarium that has both an historical interest and a very valuable collection, not as modern in terms of technology as Lisbon’s Oceanary though. However, Oeiras has more interesting things to offer you during your visit. For instance, Caxias Royal Palace with its beautiful gardens and an unforgettable profusely decorated Baroque fountain and Barcarena Gunpowder Factory, an example of century-old technology of explosive manufacturing, which is a museum nowadays. Oeiras is located only a few minutes away from Lisbon and Cascais, thanks to the railway, road (“Marginal” sea side road) and highway (A5) connections.
