The former synagogue in Tomar is located in a parallel street of ancient Rua Direita street near the cine-theatre. It is a rare example of a preserved Jewish cult place, converted in a museum. It was built from 1430 to 1460 by D. Henrique. A column-shaped structure covered by a groin vault has remained from the original construction. In 1923, Samuel Schwarz has bought the building, but he donated it on the condition that a Portuguese-Jewish Museum would be built there
