Olive oil with excellent features, thick and slightly fruity. The calcareous soil and Mediterranean climate of the region make it well suited to the cultivation of olive trees. Already in the XII and XIII centuries kings were referring to oil in the charters granted by them. At the time, Santarém was considered a major olive oil production center. In the eighteenth century, the variety Galega olive came to predominate in the region, as it is more resistant to plagues. More recently, in the XIX century, the writer and historian Alexandre Herculano introduced new developments and important changes in the production of olive oil, and therefore received the nickname "Azeiteiro" (olive oil maker).
