From the mountain to the sea

This is a diversified council stretching from Gralheira mountain to the fertile plains crossed by Aveiro ria (drowned river valley). Throughout the council, several fort hills testify a Pre-Roman presence. The most ancient reference to the council dates back to 922, known as “Villa Ulivaria”. A former military path between Conímbriga and Cale (Oporto) crossed the surrounding area of the current city, in the middle of the valleys of Antuã and Ul rivers. Oliveira de Azeméis became town in 1799, council’s headquarters in 1855 and city in 1984. The basis of its industry is mainly shoemaking. The main feats of the council in homage to Nossa Senhora deLa Salette takes place on the second August Sunday.
