PAREDES DE COURA

Bucolic landscapes to the sound of music

The charm of this bucolic council consists of typical villages, water streams flowing through all its hills and a never-ending green landscape. This region was crossed in the past by an important Roman military path leading form Braga to Tui (in Spain). This amphitheatre-shaped town situated over Côa river was once called “the barn of Minho region”, however cereal production has declined and locals began to perform other agricultural tasks. Still, Paredes de Coura became famous because of its prestigious modern music festival that completely changes the ruling rural atmosphere of the council in Summer. Many of the people who attend the music festival end up discovering the natural heritage of these lands: the pleasant river beach that benefits from the crystal-clear waters of Côa river or the Protected Landscape Area of Corno do Bico with a dynamic interpretation centre. If you are more into religious or cultural tourism, you must visit the several churches of the town (like Espírito Santo Church), the regional museum or the Casa Grande de Romarigães, the main inspiration of a novel written by Aquilino Ribeiro.
