Pena National Palace

In the 19th century, consort Prince Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, married to D. Maria II, has built here in Sintra the summer residence palace. The complex was projected by Eschwege Baron combining neo-Moorish, neo-Gothic and neo-Manueline elements with Eastern architecture motifs. This eclectic experience was taken to the extreme. Worth highlighting are the 19th century tiles, a copy of Spanish Arabian tiles, the copy of the window of Christ Convent Chapter House (Casa do Capítulo) and the figure of Triston. The luxurious vegetation of Pena Park strengthens its exotic character, thus completing an outstanding setting. The park has a certain North European atmosphere, inspired by the Romantic German gardens, which makes perfect since, since the Prince had German origins. Set in one of the highest spots of Sintra Mountain, the Palace offers a magnificent view over the surrounding region. The furniture and the Royal residence flair was preserved in the inside.
