Peniche Fortress is still an imposing military structure, which is worth visiting. A museum is located here (since 1984) depicting the history of Peniche (with pieces of archaeology and local handicraft, for example), as well as the antifascist resistance. This place was a political prison during the dictatorship period. King D. Manuel I ordered the construction of a fortress castle in that place, constantly attacked by pirates, but it was not until the ruling of D. Sebastião in 1570 that the work was finished. Under the 60 years of Filipe dynasty in Portugal, important works were carried out in the fortress, converted into a true war square.
