Situated in the south-western extreme of the island of São Miguel, Ponta Delgada is the most populated council in the Azores with ca. 66 thousand inhabitants, almost one third of the whole archipelago. In the beginning, the city was a small fishermen’s village, however it became a dynamic centre since 1522, when the first capital of the island, Vila Franca do Campo, was totally destroyed by an earthquake. Its golden era happened in the 19th century. By then it was regarded as the third city in the country, not only in terms of wealth and population, but also in terms of orange export. In present day, this is the biggest city of the Azores, the headquarters of the Regional Government, presenting several monuments and tourism spots. The main heritage exemplars are: the Main Church of São Sebastião with its beautiful Manueline portal; São Brás Fort, the first defense of the city; city’s doors and the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Esperança. The most striking celebrations of the Azores are held next to this temple, the Feasts of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres. During those feasts, locals show all their religious devotion and fervour. Despite its insularity, Ponta Delgadas also offers many important cultural and leisure venues, such as Portas do Mar with diversified shopping areas, a marina, a port for cruise boats and several hotels. However, natural beauties are the most appealing for tourists who visit these lands, especially the breathtaking Caldeira das Sete Cidades, a landmark of the Azores, offering a spectacular panoramic view from the viewpoint of Vista do Rei. Legend has it that the mythic underwater city Atlantis existed here. Apart from this place, visitors will also discover beautiful green landscapes a bit throughout the council, as well as pleasant black sand beaches, such as Milícias and Pópulo.
