According to oral tradition, the first men who set foot in the island shipped off next to Ponta do Topo. The port of Vila do Topo has a bathing zone, which is actually the result of natural excavations in the basalt stone. In this easternmost spot of São Jorge island, you will find Topo lighthouse, a reference for sailors since 1927. The “verdelho” (local wine) is planted here in small divided parcels. Topo island is located 1000 m away from the coastline, converted nowadays in Natural Reserve and a nesting area for several maritime birds.
